Earlier reports are here.
“The US church, which will dominate the conference with 125 bishops attending, is expected then to elect rapidly and consecrate a further five or six such bishops.” (Ruth Gledhill, Gay American Bishop Gene Robinson accuses opponents of ‘idolatry’)
Oh, please. How is the national church going to get all those dioceses to elect bishops solely on the basis of their sexual preferences?
It was an amazing Service and Jim Naughton’s article really sums it up well!
Giles Fraser asking the congregation to get up and sing a verse of Thine Be The Glory when that sad heckler tried to disrupt the Sermon was a truly GAFCONesque moment: if your enemy appears, sing a hymn. I hope those who had been on the GAFCON banned list appreciated the irony as much as I did.
I was interested in Ruth Gledhill’s claims: 1. Gene Robinson is to defy the Archbishop of Canterbury by turning up uninvited at Canterbury for the Lambeth conference. Just what’s this about? Gene was invited to the Market Place by conference organisers – he only rejected their attempt to limit that presence – http://www.episcopalcafe.com/lead/bishops/episcopal_news_service_the_hou.html Has The Times uncovered a plot to infiltrate an indaba? 2. The Times has learnt ..the Episcopal Church of the US plans to overturn its pledge not to consecrate any more openly gay or lesbian bishops. Has the leadership of TEC a secret plan to overturn BO33… Read more »
Yes, it’s not as if bishops retire or resign en masse or something. What nonsense.
This is the shameful way The Times (or what remains of it)sells its papers. But how clearly misinformed and risible !
Martin Reynolds wrote “I was interested in Ruth Gledhill’s claims:”
The more I read Ruth Gledhill the more I am reminded of Rita Skeeter, of Harry Potter fame.

There seems to be some physical resemblance too.

Wouldn’t the irony have been to great had the congregation been asked to sing “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name”?
“Bishop Robinson ensured that the issue of gays and Anglicans remained top of the news agenda, where it is likely to stay for the next three weeks of the conference. Now this made me smile ….. It’s all Gene’s fault. If Gene didn’t give interviews we journalists would not be talking about this. If Gene wasn’t here the news editors wouldn’t be interested in the stories – Ah a glimmer of truth there perhaps…..” He does provide a very articulate and effective focus for the media. I think he’s doing an excellent job as poster boy. He is the kind… Read more »
Jim Naughton mentioned that the ABC was going to generously put +Gene in touch with one news ageccy for an interview if he came to England. If true, I seriously doubt the ABC’s connection to the real world. Does he live in a cave?
Robinson has stated his vision perfectly. Not it is up to the others to find something equally rooted and evangelical to say.
Is it true that Hans Kung criticizes Robinson as a church-divider? I recall how Kung himself was sneered at when he raised the issue of the RCC attitude to gays 30 years ago.
