The Dean of St Albans, the Very Revd Dr Jeffrey John, preached at the Requiem Eucharist to celebrate the life of Colin Bruce Slee OBE on Saturday morning at Southwark Cathedral.
I don’t doubt he is praying for us – that we’ll have the same confidence in God’s goodness that he had, and go out from here to be more big-hearted and more truthful and un-scared ourselves. JJohn+
Trust/confidence. Un-scared. Another Anglican Hero becomes part of us.
Amen

“One 95 year old lady wrote ‘All the times I met Colin were joyful ones. He always left me feeling God loves me and wants me to be happy’. Another wrote ‘He was such a fun, large, rude, honest man’. (I love the casual inclusion of ‘rude’ there. It is so true.)”
“fun, large, rude, honest”: I now know, God willing, what I want MY epitaph to be.
Rest in peace, Colin—and rise in glory!

“He wanted the Church to be big-hearted and warm and generous and kind because that’s how God is, and if we don’t reflect that, how are we going to show God to the world? – Dean Jeffrey John – of his Friend, Colin Slee – What an absolutely wonderful epitaph for a priest of the Church – articulated by another priest of the Church, who has been at the sharper end of the Church’s disrespect for human beings, made in the Image and likeness of God but having a somewhat ‘different’ sexual orientation. I hope everyone reads Jeffrey John’s words,… Read more »

Thank you for posting this. It sums Colin up, as far as anyone could sum him up, and shows both his irrepressible nature on the one hand, and his humanity & dependence on God on the other. I think that it is highly appropriate that we consider John the Baptist in our Advent readings today. In many ways, Colin was another John the Baptist – not so much in the fiery cry to ‘repent and believe’ – but in the way in which he fearlessly spoke and lived out the message God had given him. He did this, like John,… Read more »
Thank you for making this available – it deserves to be read widely – like Colin’s thoughts themselves. I would frequently go to the Southwark Cathedral website to read transcripts of his sermons posted there. They were always inspiring and challenging. I hope in time an account of his life and perhaps some of his sermons and other writings might be drawn together and published (in a similar way to those of Michael Mayne). He was a prophet for our time.

What beautiful words for Colin, a kind and loving human being. His legacy is love and yes he sounds like a true prophet for our troubled times.

Thank you Jeffrey for those inspiring words, and for allowing some of us to share in The Presence.
