Thinking Anglicans

Some more reactions to Rome

Ruth Gledhill writes in the Times Lord Carey ‘appalled’ by Pope’s treatment of Dr Rowan Williams.
Andrew Alderson writes in the Telegraph Lord Carey: Pope should not woo disaffected Anglicans.

Riazat Butt in The Guardian writes Anglicans told to gather up wares on road to Rome
and Church politics: A way out for the archbishop.

Robert Pigott writes for the BBC Anglicans ponder Rome invitation.

Stephen Bates writes in The Guardian’s Comment is Free Backwards in faith – “Disgruntled members of the Church of England should remember that the road to Rome is rocky.”

Frank Skinner writes in the Times My Church is not a safe haven for bigots – “The road to truth should draw people to Catholicism, not its problematic moral cul-de-sacs.”

Robert Mickens and Elena Curti write in The Tablet New path to Rome – “As many as half a million Anglicans could take advantage of the new canonical structure announced by the Vatican this week allowing them into communion with the Catholic Church. But what form will such a new grouping take?”
Robert Mickens also writes in The Tablet Vatican opens door to groups of conservative Anglicans.

The incredible thing is that more Catholics ( clergy included)are joining the Episcopal Church, than the other way around! Yet TEC never boasts about this.

FS Quote:But the truth is not so uplifting. The Anglicans knocking at the door of the Vatican are doing so, it seems, because they don’t have much respect for women or gay men. … I don’t get a sense that these Anglicans are commencing a journey towards belief in transubstantiation. It feels more like they’re seeing my Church as a safe haven for homophobes and misogynists. FS Unquote. Frankly put, by Frank. Thanks loads. Flat earth views of human embodiment, in this case about women and queer folks particularly, are hardly the Great Witness conservative believers simply assume these prejudices… Read more »

Stephen Bates caricatures Anglo-Catholics as “shouting…for protection against the taint or even touch of women clergy”, “snidely demeaning the ordained women”, who are “derided” by them; their “house journal” “reeks of condescension and misogyny”. Those who go to Rome are “Johnny-come-lately apostates”. Those in the CofE who contemplate going to Rome are “arsenic and old lace vicars…many of whom are gay”. He looks forward to the ordination of women bishops and describes women priests as “bright, tolerant and conscientious” [ALL of them Stephen? Every single one?] How curious that Bates praises women priests for their tolerance – a quality conspicuously… Read more »

There are two quotations from Father Geoffrey Kirk, of ‘Forward in Faith’ reported hereunder, which need to be analysed, if one is to understand what some of the Anglican/Papists are aiming for in the new environment: 1: ‘Father Geoffrey Kirk, one of the leaders of Forward in Fath, said: “It will be my intention whatever happens to become a Roman Catholic. I am close to retirement, and I may well choose to defer my retirement in order to see that my parish transfers itself to the Roman jurisdiction, ass well as myself”‘ – Robert Piggot, BBC News – 2: ‘The… Read more »

I wonder what spoils of the Egyptians J H Newman took with him in 1845. Perhaps Littlemore vicarage missed some golden candlesticks at that time?

Lord Carey was appalled at the Pope’s treatment of Archbishop Williams.

After all, undermining Archbishop Williams is Lord Carey’s job and he doesn’t want Pope ratzinger horning in.

I wonder whether George is suffering an attack of conscience, given that he has in no small measure contributed to the current climate of division and intolerance.

I’m no fan of Lord Carey, but even a broken clock is right twice a day. Personally, I think that his criticism of the way the Pope treated the ABC was one of those times.

BillyD, I agree (and have said this elsewhere). So far, as far as I can see, only the Bishop of St Asaph has publicly said something similar about the whole shabby operation (and even he laid more blame on the FiF bishops who to some extent solicited the intervention). I can’t understand why so many otherwise intelligent people seem to be in awe of the present Pope. Even to refer to him as ‘the Holy Father’ or ‘His Holiness’ is to buy in (to some extent) to his/official RC estimation, hence fostering the general impression (which is in fact an… Read more »
