From the Diocese of Southwark: Two new Area Bishops for Southwark Diocese.
Downing Street has announced this morning that the Rev Jonathan Clark has been appointed the 10th Bishop of Croydon and the Venerable Dr Michael Ipgrave OBE has been appointed the 12th Bishop of Woolwich. The Revd Jonathan Clark succeeds the Rt Rev Nick Baines who is now the 10th Bishop of Bradford and the Venerable Dr Michael Ipgrave OBE succeeds the Rt Revd Christopher Chessun who is now the 10th Bishop of Southwark. They will be consecrated in Southwark Cathedral on 21 March 2012…
Good appointments: have known them both for yonks. Nice mixture of holiness, intelligence, sensitivity, wisdom, sense of humour.
Why couldn’t they have left one position vacant and waited for the women vote!
The first woman bishop will probablly be an assistant bishop, as is the case in Australia.
Both great priests. Good news for Southwark.
Why do you think the 1st female bishop would not be a diocesan. Surely the Dean of Leicester could be appointed to the Cathedra in that same cathedral and surely the present occupant’s retirement could be timed appropriately.
Perhaps the first woman ordained to the episcopate in the Church of England will fill the Throne of Canterbury as the first woman Archbishop of Canterbury.
Good for ‘Affirming Catholics’, I should think, with Fr.Jonathan’s perferment. Surely good news, too, for Southwark that Archdeacon Michael is also to be ‘bishopped’.
“God is working His purpose out as year succeeds to year”. Alleluia! Congratulations, both!
