Great article by Michael Binyon. Blessed are the peacemakers. Respect for the autonomy of both sides is essential, however, to genuine reconciliation. And if an undertaking is made for matters to be treated in confidence this should be respected – often damage is inflicted in delicate situations in this way. Church leaders are not exempt from mistakes.
His bishop’s ignoring their marriage is a repetition of what priests have done to those who don’t follow the rules of conformity, time out of mind–just another example of the ugliness of religious institutions that will sacrifice anything and anyone they must to maintain their status-quo. In this case, the refusal to hear Christ’s prophetic demand that we be perfect as our heavenly father is perfect, i.e., to love unconditionally – is particularly obscene because it amounts to an utter refusal of the Gospel.
