In response to the article by Eric Pickles that I linked to last week, Andrew Brown writes in The Spectator about The theological illiteracy of Eric Pickles.
Richard Beck blogs about Search Term Friday: Type 1 and Type 2 Errors and Deciding Who Is Going to Hell.
Christopher Howse writes in his Sacred Mysteries column in The Telegraph: The full glory of Miss La La.
I had a choice to make: comment on Richard Beck’s statistical scenarios or Christopher Howse’s Sacred Mysteries. I could also say something about Andrew Brown’s article. Choices, choices. I can see where the Urim and the Thummim came in handy.
Read Christopher Howse with interest. While I love the Degas painting depicting Miss La La, I find Howse rather over focused and tightly wound with regard to the line from Irenaeus, “the glory of God is man fully alive”.
It took me back to a long running CBC television program here in Canada titled, Man Alive. Hosted by the late Roy Bonisteel, the program over its long run really drew out the implications of the phrase. Maybe Howse could catch some old episodes.

I’m developing a bit of a crush on Andrew Brown. I wish that half the commentators on religious affairs in this country were half as sensitive and thoughtful as this self-described atheist.
Great blog by Richard Beck – clear thinking, step by step, good conclusion. Though not all of us believe in Hell. Even for those who do, it’s incorrect to say that “Christians have to make a choice, grouping people into the categories of Saved or Lost” – but we do have to make a choice about ourselves. That is, St Paul says “examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith.”
