Bishop of Leicester: Martyn James Snow

The Queen has approved the nomination of the Right Reverend Martyn James Snow, BSc, BTh, MA Suffragan Bishop of Tewkesbury, in the diocese of Gloucester, for election as Bishop of Leicester in succession to the Right Reverend Timothy John Stevens, MA, on his resignation on 31 August 2015.

The Right Reverend Martyn Snow (aged 47), studied at Sheffield University and then trained for the ministry at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. He served his first curacy at Brinsworth with Catcliffe and Treeton in the diocese of Sheffield from 1995 to 1997. He worked for the Church Mission Society in Guinea, West Africa from 1998 to 2001.
From 2001 to 2010 he was vicar at Christ Church, Pitsmoor, in the diocese of Sheffield. From 2007 to 2010 he was also Area Dean of Ecclesfield. From 2010 to 2013 he was Archdeacon of Sheffield and Rotherham. Since 2013 he has been Suffragan Bishop of Tewkesbury.
The Right Reverend Martyn Snow is married to Dr Lynn Snow, a paediatrician and they have 3 children (aged 14, 12 and 10). Alongside his enjoyment of travel and engaging with other cultures, his interests include sport, music and kayaking.

I honestly thought The Dean of York was destined for the see of Leicester. Oxford may be?
Dunwich has sunk without trace.
Seeing so many Evangelicals being appointed gives me pause for thought.
His name makes me think of “Game of Episcopal Thrones…”
Rumour is that this man Snow is an Evangelical of the “celibacy the only option for gay clergy” type. Can anyone confirm or deny that?
In any case, we should be concerned at the stream of Evangelical or Evangelically trained people processing to bishoprics. This can only unbalance the character and outlook of the Church of England in a most disturbing way.
However good the suffragan you have to wonder how wise it is to appoint them, let them have just two years to get to know their diocese/area, its people & problems – and then promote them to diocesan elsewhere. (I believe Martyn Snow has been in the Gloucester diocese just two years) Or is there such a shortage of talent?
In answer to +Pete (post at 4.53 pm), while most of ancient Dunwich lies under the North Sea, there is still a Dunwich village and a church (St James’s), built in 1820 because all but one of the other six churches in the parish were then under water and All Saints was about to suffer the same fate (it eventually fell over the cliff in 1919.) (The others were dedicated to St John, St Leonard, St Martin, St Nicholas and St Peter.) This means Rachel will be appointing a suffragan! That’ll be one to watch. (We can but hope.)
Legend has it that at certain tides church bells can still be heard beneath the waves off what remains of the Dunwich Coast. I wonder if they will ring out from under the sea when eventually the name of a new bishop for the Suffragan See is announced?
Looks like Dunwich has emerged from the brine.
