One of the very few bishops to go right to the wire – the eve of his 70th birthday (although he could actually have gone on until the eve of his 71st birthday – still being 70!). Best wishes for a long, happy and healthy retirement.

I too wish Dr Redfern well in his retirement. But what of Mrs. Redfern? Will she be retiring as well? I think we should be told.

Malcolm Dixon raises an important question. When I read this item, I said to myself, ‘let’s hope his retirement residence is not within commuting distance of the Wash House.’ I think the C of E is more than ready for a change of approach to senior appointments, and we have had rather too long of the former British Gas method, and (what seems like) its associated fortress mentality.

Mike Dobson. I agree. More theologian and Teachers , less managers.
