This Measure was debated, and passed, by the Houses of Commons and Lords last month. It received Royal Assent today and came into force immediately. This month’s meeting of the Church of England’s General Synod can now take place remotely.

If it hadn’t received Royal Assent but needs it, how did the previous meeting take place remotely?
The meeting on 24 September 2020 wasn’t a remote meeting but a one-day special meeting in Church House, Westminster (with social distancing strictly observed), convened for the purpose of debating and approving the Measure to enable future meetings, in particular that scheduled for 23-25 November 2020, to be held remotely. Although no member was barred from attending, attendance on 24 September 2020 was limited in practice to around 100 – the number necessary for there to be a quorum in each House.
