“Welcome from the Anglican Communion guests”?
For an agenda item to produce a guffaw is an achievement. Yet here, in 6 words, we see encapsulated the Church of England’s confused notions of the Anglican Communion.
If a “welcome” is “from” someone, then that person is the host, not the guest.
If there are “Anglican Communion guests,” then the welcome is given by the Church of England to its Communion guests.
Doubtless much of this confusion will carry over to the Canterbury CNC discussion.
Will someone at synod please question and/or challenge the endless appointment of staff to surround the ABC. https://pathways.churchofengland.org/job/pathways/3256/chief-of-staff-and-strategy-to-the-archbishop-of-canterbury
The job of ABC is complex but the current Lambeth operation is extending the reach of the present incumbent beyond what is normal and helpful.
It’s a direct replacement for David Porter, who’s announced he’s leaving. I have no view one way or the other on the number of staff at Lambeth, but this isn’t a new position.
Thanks for the clarification. At a time when a lot of dioceses are having to be creative when it comes to appointing support staff, managing with a leaner central office, it would be good to see the ABC sharing in that approach. But that is not, it appears, his default leadership style. I note that the Bishop of Dover will also soon have two full time executive assistants. All justifiable I am sure, but also part of a culture that needs to be challenged. For me the high level of staffing at provincial level emphasises the vast inequality of spending… Read more »
Splendid use of “creative”, Stephen. Irregular verb: I am creative, you are ill-advised, he/she/it is crazy.
This post could be a secondment from the Anglican Communion (with them picking up the salary cost) since apparently they are going to get a considerable chunk of ABC time.
Equation: more bureaucracy = less democracy?
I sincerely hope that there will be many trenchant questions asked at this synod. The state of the Church of England and its lowering morale calls out for open and frank questioning. Some factual answers would help. Some examples, and I am sure others will have many. Can a breakdown, by diocese, be given of the cost of running Bishops’ offices and of Bishops’ expenses? What local initiatives in ecumenism are taking place in dioceses? Can numbers by diocese be given of parishes which have opted not to accept women priests and how does this compare with figures of five… Read more »
