Bishop of Swindon to retire

The Rt Revd Dr Lee Rayfield, the Bishop of Swindon, has announced that he will retire on Sunday 30 April 2023.

With all the upheaval going on in the Anglican world it is a comfort to hear the gentle news that the Bishop of Swindon is to retire. Nothing against the Bishop of Swindon of course.

We have been very lucky to have him here in the Diocese of Bristol for 18 years, and wish him and his wife a long and happy retirement.

I have never met Lee, but I well recall the bishop who appointed him, Mike Hill, speaking highly of him. One of the few members of the College of Bishops to have a science (human biology) background. Every good wish for his retirement.

I lived in the Diocese of Bristol in the past between 1966 to 1983 (the year I entered my Monastery at Roslin), and my home was the Family home at Corsham in Wiltshire, Before the Suffragan See of Bristol was in existence it was the Suffragan See of Malmesbury and Swindon was the Archdeaconry. When Barry Rogerson was Bishop of Bristol, he wanted the See renamed as the See of Swindon and this duly went through all the canonical and legal processes and the See was renamed in 1994, and Malmesbury took the place of Swindon as the Archdeaconry. A Freudian slip here I should have said the Suffragan See of Swindon not “The Suffragan See of Bristol” I may have just reached 65, but I have not gone Durlarley yet!!!! Jonathan

There was, however, briefly a Suffragan See of Bristol in the Reformation era.

Yes, Bristol was one of the sees in the Suffragan Bishops Act of 1534. Another was Leicester.
