Michael Tavinor – a considerable Dean who made our choir from St. Peter’s, Bexhill so welcome when they sang God’s praises in Hereford cathedral last August. His book on the shrines of saints is well worth reading – a great reference work. May he have a long, healthy and happy retirement following a highly significant ministry..

One of the last great English deans – a pastor and scholar and no mean musician, too. Hereford Cathedral has been a happy place, where the steady, completely unflashy,rhythm of the liturgy pulsates and you sense the faith is alive. We can only hope that Hereford’s new Dean is, again, a scholar and pastor in the mould of Willis and Tavinor. He is also a former cathedral precentor, and I am reliably informed that the Wash House doesn’t like precentors becoming deans – despite the fact that they are the the people who oversee the liturgy and music that attracts… Read more »
As a former Dean i make no claim for my own greatness, but would defend my former colleagues in the Deans Conference (as it was then) as fine examples of that vocation.

I hope the restrictions have been eased by 31 January and the Cathedral and Diocese can give him the send off he deserves.
