With regard to lesbian relationships, and visibility, in my childhood I remember two couples – an elderly school teacher across the road, and my great aunt who we occasionally visited. In both cases, these ladies lived with ‘companions’. I think, to be honest, most people knew they were really living with partners, but the ‘companion’ concept was society’s way of turning a blind eye. Susannah – thank you. That is beautifully expressed. It’s a long way from the hate speech carried out in the name of a religion based around love for God self and neighbour.
Here in the US, a woman who wrote for her entire career for a very conservative political journal died recently. The public announcement stated that she lived with her “roommate” of 30+ years, adding that the roommates were “also third cousins”. I was acquainted with the two women and I wonder what made the relationship acceptable to the right-wing political types: the fact that they were politically conservative or that they were third-cousins.
